No Jury, No Prize
There is no jury there is no prize
As part of the ongoing visual arts programme for City of Culture 2013 and the continued profile of emerging and established Artists ,The London Street Gallery in Derry~Londonderry, will host an unprecedented exhibition NO JURY NO PRIZE, from October 20th to November 6th, celebrating the creativity of our visual artists across the city ,region and indeed the island of Ireland. Running in the City and in part collaboration with key cultural partnerships during the Turner Prize , the entirely, un-juried exhibition will consist potentially of hundreds of artworks. The Exhibition is the idea of Rory Harron PHD Glasgow School of Art, building upon the success of curating emerge+see earlier in the year ,working alongside Noelle McAlinden and The London Street Gallery. There will also be an accompanying Symposium held at The Playhouse during the exhibition
"We see ‘No Jury, No Prize’ as both a celebration of art and creativity and a conceptual experiment into what is art, who is an artist and how we can open these parameters up. This is an opportunity to participate in this major group exhibition. The exhibition is inspired by the artistic experimentation and egalitarian ethos that emerged out of the Salon des Refusés and the Société des Artistes Indépendants in 19th century Paris. In contrast to the selectivity of the official government-sponsored Salon of the Académie des Beaux-Arts (the then leading art exhibition in the world), the alternative Salons were truly democratic. They were integral to the birth of the avant-garde and modernism; famously displaying the work of Cézanne, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Pissaro, Seurat and Signac among thousands of others. In 1884, the Society of Independent Artists was founded with the simple motto - "No jury nor awards". Our exhibition follows this basic rule. " - Rory Harron
Preparations are underway for a one day accompanying symposium that will be held at the Playhouse Theatre on Nov 2nd during the course of the exhibition . This public discussion will be inspired by both The Turner Prize and NO JURY NO PRIZE, and will include presentations from a selection of invited speakers from artists, curators,Galleries including representatives from Glasgow School of Art . The Playhouse is a fitting venue as Joseph Beuys (who famously declared that ‘everybody is an artist’) once lectured in the space. We welcome submissions from the city, region, across Ireland, Britain and beyond.
